Weekly Noise Exposure Calculator
Use this calculator when daily noise exposure varies across the week. Enter the daily LEP,d for each working day. The calculator works out the weekly average (LEP,w) in dB(A) and points, then compares the result against the action and limit values set by the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

Add a daily exposure for at least one working day. Leave non-working days blank.
How to Use This Calculator
Pick whether the daily exposures you’re entering are unprotected (compare against the Lower and Upper Exposure Action Values) or measured at the ear with hearing protection accounted for (compare against the Exposure Limit Value). Pick the input units, dB(A) or points. Enter the daily LEP,d for each working day and leave non-working days blank. The calculator works out the weekly LEP,w in both units and tells you which threshold it sits against.
When Weekly Averaging Is Appropriate
The regulations only allow weekly averaging in specific circumstances. HSE guidance says it should be used where noise exposure on one or two working days is at least 5 dB(A) higher than the others, or where the working week is three or fewer days. It can’t be used to dilute a steady high daily exposure. If exposure is roughly the same every day, the Daily Noise Exposure Calculator is the correct tool.
Why It Matters
Whether you’re managing noise at work for a small team or a whole production floor, the weekly average is what counts when daily exposures swing. Get this number wrong and you’ll either over-engineer (paying for controls you don’t need) or under-protect workers and miss the regulatory threshold that triggered the assessment.
This calculator follows the method used in HSE’s noise exposure spreadsheet. It’s a guide, not a substitute for a formal noise risk assessment.
About Advanced Noise Solutions
Advanced Noise Solutions is a specialist industrial noise consultancy based in St Albans. For 38 years we’ve helped UK manufacturers solve noise problems where they actually start, at the source, rather than wrapping the whole machine in an acoustic enclosure. Our AcoustiFix methodology typically delivers higher dB reductions than enclosures, at a fraction of the cost, with none of the access, visibility or maintenance trade-offs.
If your weekly exposures are pushing the action values or the ELV, hearing protection alone isn’t a long-term answer. We diagnose the real source of the noise and engineer a fix that brings unprotected exposure down. Get in touch or call us on 01727 864667 to talk it through.
