Press Workshop Soundproofing Example
After a business review, a company making products for the food industry decided to close one factory and move all their power press machines into another factory. They believed the existing sound insulating material within the factory building was sufficient to avoid causing noise nuisance to residents living nearby. They moved all the presses into the factory at the same time.
When the presses started up on the first night shift in the new building, the noise at the nearby houses was so loud that the company received 20 noise nuisance complaints within the first 30 minutes alone. The company immediately had to suspend all night shifts. This caused huge problems because it meant that the company was unable to supply sufficient product to meet their orders, and it put their business at risk. A solution was urgently needed.
We responded very quickly to the company’s plight, and carried out tests to determine the noise reduction needed and the optimum solution. It turned out that the material fitted to the interior of the factory was a low performance building soundproofing material that provided low noise reduction. So, we designed a high performance sound insulation solution for the building. This was highly successful, reducing the press noise below the night time background noise level – a reduction of more than 15 dBA.
Our highly effective workshop soundproofing solution enabled the company to immediately re-start night shifts and carry on their normal business, fulfilling their orders without causing noise nuisance or complaint.
Our solution achieved such a large noise reduction that it made the presses inaudible at the nearest houses, even at night. It was so successful that, afterwards, a local resident approached our noise engineer (at night), and asked why he was bothering to measure the noise when the presses were not running. When the noise engineer said that they were, he replied “that’s incredible! Fantastic!”

Workshop Soundproofing Example
A company that owns an industrial estate was refurbishing each workshop on the industrial estate in turn. This involved replacing the asbestos cladding with lightweight steel cladding. When a company moved its business into the first unit to be refurbished noise nuisance complaints were immediately received from residents of an adjacent house.
An Environmental Health Officer was called in, and served a Noise Abatement Notice stating the amount of noise reduction that was required within a given timescale, otherwise the company would face a large fine or be prohibited from using their machines.
A dust extract fan and a CNC router machine were the cause of the noise nuisance. These were the two main machines used by the business. We recommended noise reduction measures to suppress the machine noise at source. A very high sound reduction was needed. So we also designed a building soundproofing solution to further reduce noise transmission to the adjacent house.
The effect of our solution was assessed in conjunction with the Environmental Health Officer. He declared that the workshop soundproofing and the “at source” machine noise control treatment had successfully abated the noise nuisance, and that the requirements of his Noise Abatement notice had been successfully achieved.
We also carried out a noise survey for other companies on the industrial estate, to assess their noise levels and to predict likely levels of noise transmission to the houses following refurbishment and relocation to a different unit on the industrial estate. This data was then used to recommend additional sound insulation or other noise control measures necessary to prevent noise nuisance complaints following refurbishment of all the other units on the industrial estate.
