Air Conditioner Noise Reduction
Air conditioners are a common cause of noise nuisance along with air condensers, chillers, dry air coolers and their cooling fans. A high noise reduction is often needed to resolve the complaints. Our advanced noise solutions often provide a much higher sound reduction than other noise control products, so often solve nuisance problems where other methods have failed. In addition, our solutions often provide large cost savings compared with other air conditioner noise reduction methods.
We specialise in reducing air conditioner noise for industrial companies or offices / commercial companies (we do not normally work on small air condenser noise problems for small shops etc.). Below are some examples of the many air conditioner noise control projects we have carried out for industrial air condenser equipment, chillers, dry air coolers, and their cooling fans.

Air Conditioner Noise Reduction Example
A solution was required for several air conditioners at an onion packing factory in the food industry. These were causing noise nuisance to residents of a nearby house. The air conditioners provide cooling air for the onion cold stores. Due to their close proximity to the house and garden, a very high noise reduction was needed.
We carried out an investigation and assessed all the air conditioner noise reduction options. Then we provided details of the options likely to provide sufficient sound reduction. The option that we recommended was selected by the customer. This achieved about 20 dBA sound reduction. This is such a large noise reduction that the air conditioners were no longer audible at the house, completely solving the noise nuisance problem.
Air Conditioner Noise Control Example
A noise control solution was required for air conditioners at a pharmaceutical factory. They were causing noise nuisance for nearby residents, especially at night. We provided a low cost air conditioner soundproofing solution that reduced the noise such that it was inaudible at the houses.

Air Conditioner Noise Reduction for Office Example
Several air conditioner units were causing noise disturbance in a large commercial office. They were generating a loud low frequency noise drone. The noise drone was annoying office workers and causing considerable disturbance of concentration. We were asked to provide a solution to reduce the noise.
There are 8 air conditioner / condenser units mounted on the external wall of the office. These chiller units provide cooling for the office on the opposite side of the wall and also for a computer data centre. The air conditioner units each contain a cooling fan and a compressor.

We carried out diagnostic noise tests. These showed that the compressors were the source of the annoying low frequency drone. Air conditioner fans can also produce a loud low frequency drone, so it is important to carry out diagnostic noise tests to determine the main noise source. Otherwise, time and money can be wasted on treating the wrong noise source, which is likely to result in little or no sound reduction.
Our air conditioner noise reduction solution treated the compressors at source to suppress the low frequency drone. It completely resolved the noise problem. Our solution achieved such a high sound reduction that the drone was no longer audible in the office. It had been very loud previously. Not only was our air conditioner noise control solution highly effective, but the installation cost was very low.
We use techniques that reduce air conditioner noise at source wherever practicable because this usually provides the highest sound reduction at lowest cost. This air conditioner noise reduction technique is highly effective – as shown by the fact that it made the noise drone inaudible in the office in the above example.

Air Conditioner Noise Control Method
In the above example, compressors were the main source of the drone sound that was causing annoyance and noise disturbance. However, sometimes most of the noise is generated not by compressors but by the cooling fans located within the air conditioner / condenser / chiller / dry air cooler units. There are various ways to reduce fan noise – the best being to reduce the sound at source. There are details of our specialist fan noise solutions for reducing the noise at source on silencing fan noise.
The key to finding the most effective and lowest cost solution is to firstly carry out diagnostic noise and vibration measurements to determine the main noise source. The tests must also determine whether the sound is due to vibration from the air conditioning unit, or whether it is airborne, because the solution will be different for each. In either case, we can provide a highly effective air conditioner soundproofing solution for a low installation cost.
There are several different methods that can be used to reduce air conditioner noise, ranging from expensive ones to solutions having a very low installation cost. Many noise control companies are unaware of low cost solutions, so they propose high cost sound reduction methods. We specialise in providing specialist air conditioner noise control solutions that have a very low installation cost. So companies can often save a lot of money by choosing our solutions to solve their noise problems.
