Sound control for a night club causing noise disturbance
in flats
Loud noise from a disco in a ground floor night club was causing
noise nuisance and sleep disturbance in the flats above, even though
the ground floor area had been treated extensively with acoustic
insulation material to control the sound. The local Environmental
Heath Officer required that the company implement sound control
measures to abate the nuisance.
We carried out noise and vibration tests to assess the main transmission
paths. Then we recommended measures to vibration isolate both types
of loudspeaker to considerably reduce the structure-borne noise.
We also recommended use of an acoustic limiter to control the sound,
i.e. limit it to a lower level. This would provide several benefits.
Firstly, it would control (i.e. limit) the level of airborne sound
transmission to the flats. Secondly, it would reduce the risk of
bar staff and other workers suffering hearing loss - because
there was no control over current sound levels, these workers were
being exposed to sound levels well above the legal limit set in
the Control of Noise at Work regulations. Thirdly, it reduces the
risk of hearing loss for people visiting and dancing at the night
club.
